01 · THE CHALLENGE

Finance capability depended on more than technical knowledge. It required a shared foundation for applying that knowledge to business decisions.

BUSINESS NEED

A corporate finance organization wanted to strengthen the capabilities of its Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) professionals by establishing a more consistent foundation in core finance practices, business partnership, and analytical decision-making. Existing knowledge and experience varied across the organization, making it difficult to create a shared understanding of how finance professionals should approach their work and contribute to business outcomes.

The goal was not simply to deliver training. It was to build a scalable development experience that would strengthen capability, accelerate professional growth, and create greater consistency across the function.

THE CAPABILITY GAP

Finance professionals needed more than technical knowledge. They needed opportunities to apply financial concepts within realistic business scenarios, strengthen consulting and business partnership skills, and better understand how their work supported organizational decision-making.

While valuable learning resources already existed, they were largely disconnected and depended heavily on individual experience or manager support. A more intentional learning journey was needed to provide a consistent foundation, reinforce key concepts over time, and create meaningful opportunities for practice, reflection, and peer learning.

WHY IT MATTERED

Strong finance organizations rely on professionals who can do more than produce accurate analysis. They must interpret information, influence decisions, collaborate across functions, and serve as trusted business partners.

By investing in a structured capability-building program, the organization sought to improve consistency, increase learner confidence, and establish a repeatable approach to developing finance talent. The initiative also demonstrated how Learning and Development could serve as a strategic business partner by aligning capability development directly with organizational priorities rather than delivering standalone training.

02 · MY ROLE

Strategy through execution

My contribution extended beyond curriculum development to performance consulting, stakeholder alignment, program strategy, and end-to-end execution.

  • Led the end-to-end learning strategy, including performance consulting, curriculum architecture, learning experience design, implementation, and continuous improvement.
  • Designed a six-month blended learning journey that integrated instructor-led learning, self-paced resources, executive engagement, collaborative learning, and workplace application.
  • Managed program delivery, learner experience, facilitator coordination, communications, and evaluation across the pilot cohort.
  • Helped define the capabilities, behaviors, and business partnership skills expected of successful finance professionals.
  • Guided stakeholders toward a performance-centered approach that aligned learning investments with organizational priorities rather than standalone training requests.
  • Established a repeatable learning architecture that could scale across future capability-building initiatives.
  • Finance leaders and business stakeholders to identify capability needs and define desired performance outcomes.
  • Subject matter experts to translate technical expertise into practical learning experiences.
  • Executive leaders and program facilitators to provide business context, reinforce strategic priorities, and create meaningful engagement throughout the learning journey.

03 · STRATEGIC APPROACH

Start with performance.

Design for the work.

Every design decision followed one principle: learning should help people perform more effectively in the context of their everyday work.

04 · THE SOLUTION

The solution was a six-month blended learning journey designed to build a more consistent foundation in FP&A while helping participants apply core concepts to their day-to-day work. Rather than relying on a single course or event, the program combined structured learning, executive context, peer interaction, workplace application, and ongoing support into one cohesive development experience.

Each component was intentionally connected to the broader capability goals of the finance organization, creating a program that was practical for participants, relevant to business priorities, and repeatable for future cohorts.

How the Solution Addressed the Challenge

The solution created a shared development experience for finance professionals with different levels of knowledge and experience. By combining a consistent curriculum with practical application and business leader engagement, the program helped participants strengthen foundational capability while gaining greater confidence in how they applied FP&A practices within their roles.

05 · OUTCOMES

A repeatable architecture for finance capability

The initiative established an enterprise-level approach to foundational FP&A development and a stronger platform for L&D to partner with the business on strategic capability needs.

01

Created greater consistency in how foundational FP&A concepts, planning practices, and business partnership expectations were introduced and reinforced.

02

Expanded access to structured development through a six-month journey combining instruction, reflection, peer learning, executive context, and workplace application.

03

Supported greater learner confidence in applying financial concepts within day-to-day responsibilities.

04

Strengthened connections among participants, finance leaders, and subject matter experts through executive engagement and cohort-based learning.

05

Established a centralized structure for resources, learner support, facilitator guidance, and program communication.

06

Created a repeatable learning architecture that could be refined, adapted, and scaled for future finance cohorts.
